At just 26, she played alongside Hollywood stars, she won awards in the cinema industry, but she remained modest and down on earth. Madalina Bellariu Ion is a beautiful and talented actress who gave Romania to London, to fulfill her dream. In the next interview, you will know Madalina the way she is.
Adanye: Hi Madalina. Thank you for accepting this interview.
Madalina: My pleasure.
Adanye: You are an young and talented actress. Tell me, it was your dream to become an actress or it just happen?
Madalina: I’ve always admired theatre as a child. But, only 6 years ago, I realised that I could be a full time actress and that I will succeed being financially independent by working in the filed I love the most. I took part in extracurricular activities ( acting classes) and I have participated on behalf of the school to theatre festivals. I took my first award as an actress, in a lead role, at a theatre festival in Mioveni, when I was 14. So it all started initially, as an accident. I have been told back then that I had talent , but I gave up the idea of following up the acting career when I had to choose an University and to move to Bucharest, the capital of Romania . I went to the Faculty of Letters , from the University of Bucharest. My parents were not supporting the idea of me following an acting career because, as we know, in Romania the actors are neither paid well , nor they receive the respect they deserve.
Six years ago, I moved to London, where I studied acting. Now I am fulfilled, because I love my work very much.
Adanye: You were a successful model in Romania and now you are a successful actress. How was this transition for you?
Madalina: I cannot call myself a successful model, but I used to collaborate and do some modelling. As well as I did acting, since I was in Romania, during my high school and university. It’s as if even back then something was pulling me towards the camera . Most probably is the fact that I felt I succeeded in expressing myself better in front of the camera. I had the feeling that nobody was judging me, and that I can transfer exactly the way I feel without social barriers. The music video called ” Prietena ta”/” Your Girlfriend” by singer Randy had lots of success in Romania. I also shot for various commercials and photoshoots. One of the successful television commercials 6 years ago is the one for Avon, I filmed opposite Cornel Ilie ( Vunk). As soon as I finished the University of Bucharest , I decided to apply to an acting school in London. And from there onwards my acting career started to become serious. The transition for me was more about the idea of starting everything all over again, from zero , in a country where I didn’t know anybody. The enthusiasm of succeeding in doing what i love and being part of an acting school, suppressed the fear of the unknown or of the failure.
Adanye: Why did you choose England and not Romania or America?
Madalina: The thought of being quite close to my family was appealing to me . In Los Angeles,
many actors struggle to sustain themselves financially and to get the roles . The competition is huge out there. I had a different vision and I believe that the moment an actor is awarded at renowned film festivals, the US producers will look at you with a different perspective . Suddenly you are no more as any other actor and you bring something to the industry. Sometimes we need to think “outside of the box” like the saying of the Americans, and thinking altruistically : ” what do we actually bring new to the industry?/ what do we have to offer ?/ why each of us is special?”. As actors we have the temptation to think how to actually get the roles instead of firstly thinking about what it is that we offer to the role which others can’t (authenticity, our own personality etc ).
Adanye: You have played with Jude Law. How did you felt when you find out that you will play alongside the famous actor and how was meeting him?
Madalina: I was extremely happy. The casting was held in many cities, so I was aware of the fact that I have been selected for this role in The Young Pope from at least other 50 actresses who were invited to do the audition tape. That was the first stage of the audition process, which was followed up by other 2 castings in front of the casting director. After that with the director, Paolo Sorrentino.
It was really easy to work with Jude Law, because he is extremely modest. After only 5 minutes speaking with him, I’ve forgotten that I was speaking with a star . We firstly met in the make-up van. The make-up artists were doing their work while I was looking over the changes of a new scene that I received from the director . I didn’t even get to finish reading that new scene, when I was asked by Jude to rehearse it together. Scott Shepherd, the actor playing Cardinal Dussolier was also present, so we all got to rehearse the scene before the shooting took place.
During our lunch breaks we got to eat at the same table, we rehearsed, we laughed together and we then filmed. Jude is very natural , relaxed, he treats everyone on the set with a lot of respect. I believe that in order to do a very good film we firstly need to be a great team work. And that was definitely the case when filming for The Young Pope.
Adanye: You already won your first award. How do you feel about it?
Madalina: I am surely very proud, but to many more to come. The award at Cannes TV and Media Awards belongs to the whole team. I played the lead role in this short corporate film , a girl named Athena and I have been invited on stage to collect the Silver Dolphin Award . I cannot describe in words the amazing feeling when the trailer of the film I shot was on the big screen . I believe the biggest reward as an actor is to be appreciated by the public and to be given an award for your performance.
Adanye: What is the key of success in your opinion?
Madalina: The perseverance and the willingness to work hard. An actor encounters many insecurities coming from the industry. 90 % of the times we meet with failure ( at castings or projects meant to happen that end up not getting financed etc) . If we are ready to give up our dreams quite easily maybe we should think that we didn’t wish them hard enough in the first place.
Adanye: What inspires you?
Madalina: I find my inspiration in people , in simple things : a smile , a reaction. I like observing other people in the park , in coffee shops etc . I admire my mother very much, I look up to her as being an angel , a special person and a very strong woman. She is definitely my role model.
Adanye: With who would you like to play in a movie?
Madalina: Jenniffer Lawrence, Anthony Hopkins and of course Al Pacino.
Adanye: What are you doing in a normal day?
Madalina: In my case, each day is very different from each other. I go to gym twice a week. I have at least two castings a week that I have to prepare for , to learn new lines every time and read new exciting scripts/screenplays. I have canto lessons, accent lessons or stage combat classes. I belong to a small community of actors that support and help each other when needed. Especially when we have to film for a self tape audition or when we need to rehearse for a theatre play.
Adanye: What do you like to do in your free time?
Madalina: I love going to theatre. Many times I go to see my ex classmates actors in theatre plays they organize. I love traveling and every time I have some free time, I go and visit my very good friends who are living in other cities around the world.
Adanye: What the people should know about you?
Madalina: I am a very empathic and sensitive person . I love to analyze other people’s behavior and to spend my time in the middle of the nature.
Adanye: Some thoughts for our readers?
Madalina: Sometimes we tend to forget that it’s important to enjoy the journey , not just the destination.
